Monday was overcast all day, with a few light drizzles but quite warm, perhaps 74F or so, which represents a heat wave here. Kerith drove Byron to the oncologist in Shotley Bridge and they were back by a bit after noon, if they give the ok, he will be on a big bird back to San Diego this weekend, but this depends on several other items this week.
Dave picked me up a little after 10:00 a.m. Just Peter, Dave and myself as Joe is taking 3 hours of driving lessons Monday and Wednesday this week to qualify for the ridiculously high insurance he is having to pay as a 17 year old male driver.
Dave and Peter set to mucking out the face. Peter had his first driving lessons on the loco. I am not sure he did any better than Joe on his first efforts, off the track at least three maybe four times during the day and he chalked up a punctured line, too. Moving 8000 pounds of steel and rock is not as easy as it looks, that much mass is hard to slow down and even a small rock on the rails can derail the locomotive and moving a 6000 pound item back on the rails can be difficult. But by days end it was mucked out. I spent the early part of the morning packing a couple of bins, then setting minerals to soak and getting up to the mine to work in one of the West Crosscuts about 11:30 a.m. Today's picture shows the face before Dave and Peter started mucking. I spent about four hours and had a bag full of twins and a few wholesale matrix specimens to show for my effort. After bait, I moved over to the new East Crosscut four about three hours with breaks for putting the loco back on track. Some interesting colors and combinations from there, can't say they will set the world on fire but should sell as they are different.
A simple dinner of chicken pie and a salad of capers, buffalo mozzarella and fresh tomatoes and we are ready to take a rest. Byron and I will go over for a beer and probably make it an early night as Monday night BBC telly is not exciting.
